Police: Flower shop delivery driver arrested on Valentine's Day

* By Steven Alford

CORPUS CHRISTI — It wasn’t a rosy Valentine’s Day for one local flower shop employee.

A 20-year-old flower delivery driver was arrested Monday after police discovered he had an outstanding warrant for possession of marijuana.

Police were called about 2:45 p.m. to the South Padre Island Drive frontage road at Everhart Road after a white Ford delivery van rear-ended a white Toyota Camry in the northbound left-hand turn lane.

As officers contacted the drivers, a 20-year-old driver of the flower truck was found to have an outstanding Nueces County warrant for a misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge from April of last year.

He was arrested and taken to Christus Hospital Shoreline Hospital, which a police spokeswoman said is standard procedure for prisoners involved in accidents, where he declined medical treatment.

The delivery driver was then was taken to the city’s detention center.

As of noon Tuesday, his bail had not been set by a judge.

Valentine's Day blooms Kalispell flower shop sales

KALISPELL- Several Kalispell flower shops are reporting an increase in sales this year for the Valentine's Day holiday.

One local florist says her shop was still sending out orders at 7 p.m. Monday.

Employees believe sales were higher this year because the holiday fell on a weekday and say many sent gifts to their significant other's workplace.

Florists say they do still have some leftover Valentine's gifts, but will quickly move them out of the store to make room for springtime flowers.

Robber Strikes Flower Shop

A robber steals thousands of dollars from a small, family-owned flower shop in Jackson. It happened early Monday morning at Brown Floral just hours before it opened for one of its busiest days of the year. The shop's recent loss goes far deeper than money. It's a staple in Jackson, a business now run by fourth generation sisters. After 146 years, it's an unfortunate first.

Diana Jonas, co-owner, Brown Floral Co.: "The cash was gone."

But Diana Jonas says, if the business can survive the great depression, wars and a recession, it can make it through a robbery.

Diana Jonas: "We stand by the neighborhood, and you know, we're gonna hang in here."

Jonas says, after a 16 hour day Sunday, they locked up and went home, knowing they'd right back to handle the Valentine's Day rush, but in that short amount of time, someone came in and stole several thousand dollars.

Diana Jonas: "Our back door was standing wide open, which I checked the door before we left, so I know it was locked."

Someone jimmied the door and headed to the office.

Diana Jonas: "You can see where the lock right here and the damage on the side where the crowbar was used. Every little bit that is taken from us, it's hard, we can't ever get it back."

It only added insult to injury.

Diana Jonas: "It's gonna go on, go down as the worst week because she was just such a big part of our lives here."

"She" is Sara Cole, an 11 year employee at Brown Floral. Cole went on maternity leave in late January and died one week later in a car accident. Her baby survived the crash, but died a few days later. On Saturday Cole was laid to rest. Two big losses in just one week, but Jonas will always have a mural she and Cole painted together.

Diana Jonas: "So that's Sara and I, so for eternity we're gonna be walking the little hill."

Jonas says she is offering a 1,500 dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.

Online flower shop fails to deliver

An online flower shop that sends bouquets and baskets across Canada sometimes substitutes one item for something completely different, without checking with the customer, or doesn’t deliver at all, according to CBC-TV’s Marketplace.

Bloomex claims to be Canada’s biggest florist, with the best value guaranteed, but when Marketplace put the company to the test it failed to deliver on its promises.

Terrie Aylesworth of Surrey, B.C., was supposed to receive a Bloomex "Chocolate Lovers" basket as a thank-you gift from her sister. The price was $69.99 plus shipping and taxes.

But instead of chocolate, Aylesworth received a box of fruit. Aylesworth called to complain, but Bloomex said it didn't have the chocolates in stock at the time.

“I personally don’t think that fruit and chocolate are comparable,” Aylesworth said.

Bloomex promised to send a replacement gift of chocolates, but she's still waiting for it and has called the company repeatedly to complain.

“There were at least 15 requests that I’d made for someone to please call me," Aylesworth said. "And no one ever did who was in a position to be able to truly help.”

The Better Business Bureau has logged 420 complaints against Bloomex in the past three years.

Marketplace ordered three flower arrangements from Bloomex, along with the Chocolate Lovers basket, described online as a decadent basket of 13 pieces, including "gourmet wafer, almonds, chocolate and truffles."

The Marketplace basket contained far less chocolate than promised, and one of the flower arrangements never arrived. The bouquets that did arrive, “Outstanding Orchids” and “Blushing Lilac,” fell short of expectations.

Columba Fuller, a professional flower judge at Toronto-based Canada Blooms, the country’s largest flower show, inspected the bouquets and gave them a thumbs-down.

The lilac bouquet was primarily yellow flowers and not what was advertised on the Bloomex site. The orchid order, which was to contain three orchids along with asters, contained two orchids and no asters.

“I can’t believe that this would happen,” Fuller complained. “If you had an important event or … it’s awful.”

Bloomex did not respond to calls from Marketplace.

Fleurt Bazilika Budapest (by Judith Klein)

Of the many things I love in life, flowers and plants are near the top of the list. Walking into the Fleurt shop on Zrinyi u. just steps from the Cathedral (Bazilika) is pure esthetic joy, so consider yourself warned- this is not your every day flower shop…and don’t miss it in your quest to reach the Bazilika at the end of the street!

Fleurt uses the best quality plants and flowers in both their fresh and their dried arrangements, which are done in the best possible taste and with great creativity. My absolute favorites are the dried rose arrangements in a wide variety of colors and sizes, they are magnificent and not too delicate to travel if you pack them properly. Using roses that have been impregnated with glycerine in Kenya according to a secret method, these arrangements last for years and make the perfect gift- especially for yourself!

In addition to the lovely choice of all things living and dried inside the shop, the staff at Fleurt are ready, willing and able to make you any kind of fresh or dried arrangement you want with some advance notice. On their web site, you can also order flowers for delivery anywhere in Budapest, just in case you need to send someone special something special. There are more photos of things at Fleurt here.
